COVERED BLOG - SPIDERDUDE

COVERED is a blog where indie artists "cover" (redraw) old comic book covers. Today they've posted my take on the Amazing Fantasy issue that introduced Spiderman. I was a huge fan of Spiderman as a kid (now I'm wishing I'd have worked Venom into this image...or the black and white costume...or..) so this was a lot of fun to do.

Want to see more comic stuff? Check out THE BATMAN from a few years ago.

kramer's ergot 7

I got the new KRAMER'S ERGOT today. It's a huge collection of comics from Mat Brinkman, Ivan Brunetti, CF, Dan Clowes, Tom Gauld, Matt Groening (!!), John Hankiewicz, Sammy Harkham, Geoff Mcfetridge, Anders Nilsen, Ron Rege Jr, Seth, and many others. My review is like many others. I'll start by saying it's huge. Here it is in a cage match vs Allister:

It's a beautiful book (and you can get free shipping if you buy it from Amazon).

Sergio Aragonés

Last night cartoonist Sergio Aragonés gave a lecture at UGA in Athens, GA. Truth is, having grown up on Groo and his comics in MAD, I would have been happy for him to just flip through some old images he'd done through the years. Instead, he talked about how he got into the business, how amazing it was to work for MAD in its prime, and told a few drinking stories. But the highlight of the talk was when he just started sketching comics for us. It actually got to where he would get people in the crowd to throw out topics and then he would come up with pantomime comics, like a mixture of . It was amazing. Each drawing was completed in roughly 35 seconds, and they were all clever and got lots of laughs. The guy really is a genius.

maze for Nick Jr

Here's an illustration that I did for this month's Nick Jr magazine. It's a valentine's day maze. The final had numbers on all of the mailboxes and the envelope the mailcat has. On newsstands now!

New Publication! Two Letters from Narrow Books.

A while back (years maybe?) I was asked to contribute to a book from Narrow Books called Two Letters volume #2. I actually forgot about it until a few copies landed on my doorstep earlier this afternoon. The books look great and actually feature a few of my favorite artists: Josh Cochran (see the cover above), Travis Millard, Mark Todd, Esther Pearl Watson, and others. Check it out at Narrow Books.

It was also great to see some of my older drawings in print. Here's a taste:

ren fair

not all kids are as awesome as Allister, I guess.

Here's a little spot I did for an article in Lola magazine about kids who are overindulged by their parents.

This reminded me of the time I was walking around by myself in Copenhagen (Rachel wasn't feeling good) and I saw a family with a kid who was super excited (8 or 9 I think). The parents were talking to each other and the kid was smiling and yelling and pointing at a carousel. I expected the parents to get annoyed because he was interrupting, but instead when they noticed he was trying to get their attention, they got excited about the carousel, too and they picked him up and ran over to it. It was such a simple thing for them to not get annoyed by the kid, but it's always stuck with me (I think this was 6 or 7 years ago!). I hope that's the kind of dad I am.

I feel very lucky that we live in a town that's so family-focused. Everywhere we go in Decatur people make us feel like Allister is their favorite customer, even when she's really busy and likes to pick up their merchandise (which happened last night in a tiny boutique). Speaking of our awesome kid, how about some new photos of her??
